Child Vision Screenings
Many low vision conditions can be hereditary and start at a young age. VisAbility Pittsburgh is committed to helping families of young children identify any concerns at the youngest age possible. Early treatment and education can make a big difference as a child grows.
Our foremost contribution to the prevention of blindness is our Child Vision
Screening Program, which has served the children of Allegheny County for more than 45 years.
One in 20 children has an undetected vision deficiency and the earlier we can help families detect these deficiencies, the more we can help do for their eye health, education and vision journey ahead.
Each year, VisAbility Pittsburgh provides vision screening to more than 14,000 children ages 1 to 6 years; and we find that correctable vision problems are found in more than 500 of those children. Free vision screenings are provided by professional screening technicians in preschools and daycare centers throughout Allegheny County. These screenings include assessment of visual acuity, muscle balance, and for children ages 3 years and older, color deficiency using fun, game-centered activities.
